D.I.V.A of the Month – February 2011
Liesl Bennett the extraordinary cake maker from Cape Town, South Africa tells us about how she turned her talent into a business!

Lelemba: Who is Liesl?
Liesl: I am a 34 year old wife and mother of three children aged 5, 8 and 16 who runs her business from home. My business is called Liesl’s Cupcakery and we create just about any type and design of cake for that special occasion. If you can imagine it, we will bake it! We also supply corporate cupcakes to organizations.

Lelemba: I have seen your stunning cakes and cupcakes, can you share with us briefly how you got started?
Liesl: It all started when I baked a cake for my daughter’s birthday. Everyone was impressed with it and thought I had bought it! My husband then suggested that I start making cakes as a business and it was the best advice anyone could ever have given! The rest is history.

Lelemba:  Wow that’s amazing and how has business been so far?
Liesl: Initially, business was slow to take off, like many new businesses I suppose. But soon I was getting referrals and repeat business and now I have constant and regular orders. I have realised that it is very important to do marketing and to deliver an excellent product because that is how I get most of my business, through referrals from happy clients.
